How shorts are built

Shorts follow one of two builds. Woven shorts are cut-down trousers with a fly, a fixed or part-elastic waistband and set-in pockets; knit and sports shorts have an elasticated waistband with a drawcord, side-seam pockets and a coverstitched hem. The use decides the build, not the length.

With the leg shortened, the hem and the inseam carry the fit, and the inseam is stated per size. Attached elastic, stitched down with rows of chainstitch, cannot roll and suits gym shorts; tunnelled elastic is softer. A gusset removes the four-seam crotch point on training styles.

Typical fabrics: Chino twill or ripstop for woven shorts; French terry, polyester knit or polyester with elastane for sports shorts
Waistband: Fixed with fly, tunnelled elastic, attached elastic or exposed branded elastic
Decoration: Leg embroidery or transfers in-house; sublimation on polyester
Testing: ISO 12947 abrasion, as specified by the buyer
