Four families of shorts and how each is built

Shorts construction depends on the fabric, fit and intended use. Woven, knit and combined constructions can use different waistbands, closures, pockets and hems. The table shows fabric and construction options for four product families; specify the required features in the tech pack and confirm them on the sample.

FamilyTypical fabricWaistband and closurePockets and details

Shorts fabrics and indicative weights

These weight ranges are indicative and must be confirmed for each project. Select the fabric with the required drape, fit, season and durability in mind. Assess these properties on the proposed material and sample; weight alone does not determine them. If shorts and trousers form a set, agree their fabric and colour requirements together.

A woven fabric with, for example, 2 to 5% elastane may be an option for stretch shorts. Stretch, recovery and shrinkage also depend on the fabric construction and finishing. Confirm them with the proposed fabric, wash tests and a fit sample rather than inferring performance from fibre content alone.

Construction: waistbands, pockets, inseam and hems

The table shows construction options to confirm against the fabric and sample. The stitch numbers below are ISO 4915 stitch types, explained on the stitch types page, and the seam arrangements are ISO 4916 classes from seam types and seam classes.

For attached or tunnelled elastic, check comfort, rolling and recovery on the sample. Securing elastic within a casing can help limit twisting. Confirm the width, colour and lead time of exposed branded elastic before approving the waistband. Waistband construction compares all three and covers the fly. Pocket choices, from side-seam to cargo, are on the pocket construction page. Specify inseam length, leg opening and rise for each size, with measurement points and agreed tolerances.

What changes the unit cost of shorts

Shorts cost depends on fabric specification, consumption and supplier price; fabric weight alone does not establish which option costs more. Construction follows, since a fly, an interlined waistband, cargo pockets, a mesh inner brief or a hook-and-loop fight-short closure each add components and operations. Decoration adds cost by method and number of placements, and print registration can affect the cutting marker when the design requires alignment. The number of colours, the quantity per colour and the packing instruction complete it; the manufacturing cost guide sets out each line.

Producing in Turkey for European Brands

Türkiye sits on the road corridor into the EU, and under the EU–Türkiye Customs Union (Decision No 1/95 of the EC-Turkey Association Council) apparel in free circulation moves into the EU without customs duty when an A.TR movement certificate accompanies the shipment; import VAT still applies, and the A.TR shows customs status rather than origin, as explained in A.TR and origin. Plan the order around the required delivery date. Bulk production typically takes 4-5 weeks after approval; development, sampling and shipping are additional, and the project schedule is confirmed at quotation. Transport options are in shipping apparel from Turkey, and the wider case in nearshoring clothing production for European brands.
