How a woven shirt is built
A shirt is a woven garment, which sets it apart from a polo: the collar, cuffs and front placket are cut from cloth and stiffened with fusible interlining rather than knitted. Plain weaves such as poplin are the usual shirting, and the sleeve is set in at the natural shoulder point.
Side seams are typically felled with a two- or three-needle chainstitch, so no raw edge remains. Because the cloth does not stretch, fit comes from the pattern alone, and a fused collar is wash-tested on the sample to check it does not bubble.
