How an anorak is built

An anorak is a pullover shell: it goes on over the head and opens only part-way, with a half-length zip or a placket under a storm flap, and it usually has a fixed hood. A windbreaker, by contrast, usually opens along its full length.

A large front pouch or chest pocket often sits across the body, so its opening needs a flap to keep rain out. The hood carries a face drawcord and sometimes a volume adjuster, and the hem closes with a drawcord. Seams are sealed only where real waterproofing is specified.

Shell fabrics: Coated or uncoated woven polyester or polyamide with a water-repellent finish
Closure: Half zip or placket with storm flap
Seams: Unsealed for a wind shell; fully or critically taped where waterproofing is specified and tested
Decoration: Heat transfers or patches; embroidery kept off any waterproof panel
