How a gilet, vest or bodywarmer is built

A gilet, also called a vest or bodywarmer, is a sleeveless layer, so the armhole finish becomes a highly visible detail: bound, faced, ribbed, elasticated or bagged out on a lined garment. It is patterned with more ease than a jacket body because it is worn over other clothes.

The word covers four builds: a softshell vest, a padded or quilted gilet, a single-layer fleece vest and a workwear vest with several pockets. A quilted jacket follows the same layer logic with sleeves; on a padded gilet the added concern is loft squeezed at the armhole binding.
