How an overshirt is built
An overshirt, or shirt jacket, is cut like a shirt from a heavier woven cloth and worn as a light outer layer. It is usually a single unlined layer, so it sits between a shirt and a jacket: more body than shirting, none of the lining or insulation a jacket carries.
Without a lining every internal seam is on show, so seams are felled, bound or neatly overlocked as a deliberate finish. Chest patch pockets with flaps, a button or snap placket and an interlined shirt collar are the typical details.
- Typical fabrics

- Buttons or press studs on a faced placket
